چکیده

There is nearly a factor of four difference in the number density of intervening MgII absorbers as determined from gamma-ray burst (GRB) and quasar lines of sight. We use a Monte-Carlo simulation to test if a dust extinction bias can account for this discrepancy. We apply an empirically determined relationship between dust column density and MgII rest equivalent width to simulated quasar sight-lines and model the underlying number of quasars that must be present to explain the published magnitude distribution of SDSS quasars. We find that an input MgII number density dn/dz of 0.273 ± 0.002 over the range 0.4 ≤ z ≤ 2.0 and with MgII equivalent width W0 ≥ 1.0Å accurately reproduces observed distributions. From this value, we conclude that a dust obstruction bias cannot be the sole cause of the observed discrepancy between GRB and quasar sightlines: this bias is likely to reduce the discrepancy only by ∼ 10%. STRONG MgII SYSTEMS IN QUASAR AND GAMMA-RAY BURST SPECTRA

The incidence of strong MgII systems in gamma-ray burst (GRB) spectra is a few times higher than in quasar (QSO) spectra. We investigate several possible explanations for this effect, including: dust obscuration bias, clustering of the absorbers, different beam sizes of the sources, multiband magnification bias of GRBs, association of the absorbers with the GRB event or the circumburst environm...

Intervening Metal Systems in GRB and QSO sight - lines : The Mg ii and C iv Question

Prochter et al. 2006 recently found that the number density of strong intervening 0.5 < z < 2 Mgii absorbers detected in gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow spectra is nearly 4 times larger than in QSO spectra. We have conducted a similar study using Civ absorbers. Our Civ sample, consisting of a total of 19 systems, is drawn from 3 high resolution and high to moderate S/N VLT/UVES spectra of 3 lon...

Explaining Disparate Absorption Statistics towards Quasars and Gamma-ray Bursts with Patchy Mg Ii Absorbers

We examine the recent report by Prochter et al. that gamma-ray burst (GRB) sight lines have a much higher incidence of strong Mg II absorption than quasar sight lines. We give additional evidence that this observed difference is not due to intervening dust extinction that would result in adverse selection effects in the quasar sample. Instead, we propose that the discrepancy is due to the diffe...

Disparate Mg II Absorption Statistics Towards Quasars and Gamma-Ray Bursts: A Possible Explanation

We examine the recent report by Prochter et al. that gamma-ray burst (GRB) sight lines have a much higher incidence of strong Mg II absorption than quasar sight lines. We propose that the discrepancy is due to the different beam sizes of GRBs and quasars, and that the intervening Mg II systems are clumpy with the dense part of each cloudlet of a similar size as the quasars, i.e. . 10 cm, but bi...

Direct Observational Test Rules Out Small Mg ii Absorbers

Recent observations suggest the incidence of strong intervening Mg ii absorption systems along the line-of-sight to gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglows is significantly higher than expected from analogous quasar sightlines. One possible explanation is a geometric effect, arising because Mg ii absorbers only partially cover the quasar continuum regions, in which case Mg ii absorbers must be conside...
